How To: External Music

Here's the thing, I haven't updated my Ipod library in ages because my music it's on an old hard drive from a old macbook, I manage to take the hard drive out, bought an USB 3.0 enclosure so that I can recover my music. I was wondering, I don't want to import my library completely because it will fill up my hard drive, is there anyway I could use that old music library and add more songs without saving them on my actual macbook pro? I want to update my library without actually having to move all the files back to my main computer.

MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch,Early 2015), OS X El Capitan (10.11.6)

See Make a split library portable if you want to move the existing library around, or Open a different iTunes Library file or create a new one - Apple Support if you want to build a new library on the external drive. You should really keep a clone on a second external for security. See Recover media from an iPod if you need to reclaim any media from the device.
